The Open Air Curtain Merchandisers buying guide

Plan access without overlooking placement.

List the products displayed and the shelf space required at peak demand. Compare usable shelf dimensions, facings and the manufacturer’s load-line instructions. Confirm the intended products and published holding conditions for the exact model.

Configuration decisions

Choose the format for the job.

Open-front or enclosed glass-door display?

Compare the way customers select products and how staff restock. An open front and a glass-door cabinet have different placement and operating instructions. Use documented performance and energy information instead of assuming one style always costs less to operate.

Airflow and ambient placement

Review guidance on drafts, room conditions, nearby ventilation and heat sources. Respect documented load lines and air-return paths. Confirm whether a night cover is included and how the manual instructs it to be used.

Measure twice. Choose once.

Fit means more than cabinet width.

Exterior & operating footprint

Check overall dimensions with handles, hinges and installed casters or legs. Allow for doors, drawers, neighbouring equipment and the model’s operating and service requirements.

Interior & loading space

Compare clear openings, usable shelf space and container dimensions. Nominal capacity does not establish whether your tray, box or pan will fit.

Doorway & delivery route

Measure entrances, corridors, turns, stairs and elevators. Obtain packaged dimensions and weight as well as cabinet dimensions. Confirm delivery and placement arrangements before ordering.

Electrical supply & receptacle

Read the selected model’s voltage, frequency, phase, rated current and plug information. Check the installation instructions against the site circuit and receptacle; have the site supply assessed where needed. Do not infer compatibility from cabinet size.

Ventilation & installation space

Use the exact model’s intake/discharge locations, required clearances and ambient operating limits. Keep the stated airflow and service access clear. An equipment photograph does not establish installation clearance.

Temperature & intended use

Verify the published operating range, intended products and loading conditions for the model. Do not substitute a broad category title for the manufacturer’s specification or assume a holding cabinet performs rapid chilling or freezing.

Shelves, pans, drawers & accessories

Check usable internal dimensions, shelf positions, load limits and pan/tray compatibility. Confirm which shelves, inserts, pans and covers are included and which require separate purchase.

Casters, legs & installed height

Confirm the supplied base, installed height, locking casters or feet and any restrictions on moving or levelling the cabinet. Compare the complete dimensional drawing with the proposed site.

Operation & ownership

Look beyond the purchase price.

Energy & operating information

Compare documented energy information for the exact model where available. Verify the operating conditions behind a figure; do not generalize efficiency from door style, cabinet size or a brand name.

Cleaning & maintenance

Review the manual’s condenser-cleaning, drain, gasket and interior-care instructions. Plan physical access for routine cleaning and service; follow the specified cleaning agents and maintenance schedule.

Commercial approvals & suitability

Verify any certification on the actual model’s documentation and confirm suitability for the intended application with the appropriate authority where required. No collection-wide certification or approval is assumed.

Warranty, parts & Canadian service

Confirm current Canadian warranty terms for the model, including parts/labour coverage, exclusions, claim process and service arrangements. Ask about parts access and installation obligations. Do not assume every model or brand has identical coverage.

Before ordering

Compare the exact models.

Use current product information and manufacturer documents for every shortlisted model. This checklist is a decision aid; it does not assign specifications to the collection.

Frequently asked questions

A few questions before ordering.

What products sell best in open air curtain merchandisers?

Chilled beverages, sandwiches, salads, dairy, prepared meals, desserts, and other grab-and-go items that benefit from visibility and quick access.

Do open air merchandisers need a night curtain?

Many operators use a night curtain to help retain cold and reduce energy use when the unit is not actively shopped.

How do I choose the right size?

Match unit width and shelf layout to your planogram, daily sales volume, and restocking cadence—wider multi-deck units reduce restocks and support more SKUs.
