The reach-in refrigerator buying guide

Choose for the way your kitchen works.

A cabinet’s door count is only the starting point. Match the storage layout, installation requirements and service access to your kitchen before comparing the purchase price.

Read the complete guide →

Start with your peak storage needs.

List what you hold on your busiest days, how it is packaged and how often staff need access. Reach-ins serve upright storage; undercounter refrigerators and prep stations serve a different position in the workflow.

Plan your refrigeration setup →
Storage

Capacity you can actually use

Compare listed capacity with internal dimensions and your containers. Account for shelf spacing, access to each section and the airflow required by the manual.

Access

Doors, sections & workflow

One, two and three-door formats offer different loading arrangements. Check full-height versus split-door layouts, hinge direction and how open doors affect the aisle.

Organization

Shelves & storage layout

Confirm included shelf quantity, adjustability and load limits. Verify pan or tray compatibility and any extra shelf part numbers for the exact model.

Configuration decisions

Choose the cabinet, then the details.

Solid door or glass door?

Solid-door storage

Consider a closed cabinet for ingredient storage where viewing the contents through the door is not a priority. Compare its actual insulation, energy data and storage layout rather than assuming every solid-door model performs alike.

Explore solid-door refrigeration →

Glass-door visibility

Consider glass when seeing stored items without opening the door supports your operation. Confirm the selected cabinet is suitable for your food-storage or display use, including its listed temperature range and shelving.

Explore glass-door refrigerators →

Top mount or bottom mount?

Top-mounted refrigeration

Review the height of the refrigeration section, overhead obstructions and access for condenser cleaning or service. Read the manufacturer’s airflow and placement instructions for the model and your kitchen conditions.

Explore top-mount refrigerators →

Bottom-mounted refrigeration

Review the lower refrigeration section, shelf loading height and the access needed around the base. Check condenser maintenance requirements and how the unit will sit beside nearby equipment.

Explore bottom-mount refrigerators →
Measure twice. Choose once.

Fit means more than cabinet width.

A nominal “27-inch” or “54-inch” product name is a format label. Use the complete dimensional drawing and installation manual to plan the installed cabinet and the route into your kitchen.

Exterior & operating footprint

Check overall width, depth and height, including handles, hinges and installed casters or legs. Allow for door swing, wall obstructions and manufacturer-specified operating and service space.

Interior & loading space

Compare interior width, depth, shelf spacing and door openings with your pans, trays and containers. Listed cubic capacity does not establish whether a particular tray or container will fit.

Doorway & delivery route

Measure entrances, corridors, turns, stairs and elevators. Obtain packaged dimensions and weight as well as cabinet dimensions. Confirm delivery and placement arrangements before ordering.

Electrical supply & receptacle

Read the model’s voltage, frequency, phase, rated current and plug type. Confirm the existing receptacle and circuit meet the installation instructions. A similar-looking plug or a familiar product size is not enough to establish compatibility; have site requirements checked where needed.

Ventilation & installation clearances

Use the clearances and ambient operating limits in the selected model’s manual. Identify the air intake and discharge locations and keep the required path clear. Check nearby heat-producing equipment, wall placement, overhead shelving and access to service panels. There is no single clearance dimension that can be applied to the entire collection.

Temperature range & intended use

Match the published operating range and intended use to what you plan to store. Holding refrigerated food, displaying beverages and freezing product are different tasks. Confirm controls and setup instructions for the exact cabinet; choose a reach-in freezer when frozen storage is required.

Casters, leveling & mobility

Confirm whether casters or legs are included, their installed height, any locking features and the manufacturer’s leveling and movement instructions. Plan cleaning access without assuming the cabinet can be moved safely while loaded. Check door operation and floor conditions as part of the final installation.

Beyond the purchase price

Plan for daily use and long-term care.

Good buying decisions include the work required to operate, clean and service the cabinet. Compare documented model information, and ask for clarification when a listing and a current manufacturer document disagree.

Energy use & efficiency

Compare published energy consumption using the same measurement basis and operating conditions. Verify any ENERGY STAR claim for the exact model before using it as a decision point. Door material, compressor location or refrigerant alone does not establish annual running cost; usage, room conditions and maintenance also matter.

Cleaning & preventive maintenance

Review access to the condenser, door gaskets, shelves and drain components. Follow the manufacturer’s cleaning method and maintenance schedule, including any condenser-cleaning instructions. Check whether removable shelves and service panels suit your cleaning routine and how staff will reach them.

Commercial certifications

Ask for the listing or certification documents that apply to the exact model and intended installation. Distinguish electrical safety, sanitation and energy certification. Confirm any approval requirements with the relevant authority; a mark shown on one product must not become a badge for the whole collection.

Warranty, parts & service

Request the current Canadian warranty terms for the model, including parts, labour and compressor coverage, exclusions, registration requirements and service arrangements. Check access to replacement gaskets, shelves and other model-specific parts. Manufacturer documents from another market may not establish Canadian coverage.

Compare with confidence

Compare the whole cabinet—not just the price.

Build a shortlist across the brands that suit your operation. Compare the same documented fields for each exact model; door count and nominal capacity alone do not establish equivalent storage or installation requirements.

Common buying questions

Clear answers before you order.

Use these questions to narrow the selection, then check the current documents for your model.

What size reach-in refrigerator do I need?

Choose based on kitchen volume and storage needs. Single door units fit smaller kitchens; double and triple door models provide higher capacity for busy operations.

one-door, two-door, three-door

Are commercial reach-in refrigerators energy efficient?

Most modern units use improved insulation and efficient compressor systems to maintain stable temperatures while helping reduce operating costs.

What should I compare before buying?

Compare capacity, door count, overall dimensions, shelving layout, voltage, temperature range, warranty, and delivery/installation access.

Should I choose a reach-in or an undercounter refrigerator?

Consider where and how ingredients are accessed. A reach-in offers upright storage; an undercounter refrigerator may suit a lower workstation. Compare the actual models’ storage and installation requirements. Many layouts use different cabinet types for different tasks.

Is top mount or bottom mount the better choice?

Compare the cabinet’s layout and installation instructions with your space. Consider overhead access, base access, loading height, condenser cleaning and nearby equipment. Neither position establishes suitability for every kitchen.

How do I confirm delivery and installation fit?

Supply the installed location dimensions and delivery-route measurements. Check packaged size, doorways, corners and any stairs or elevators, then confirm the manufacturer’s clearances and site utilities. Ask about the actual delivery and placement arrangements for your order.

What warranty and certifications apply?

They depend on the exact model and Canadian terms. Request current documents and clarify any discrepancy before ordering. Collection-wide badges or another model’s warranty should not be used as proof for the cabinet you select.
